Living in Florida

Wow! Florida is sooo hot! And I'm not even in the hottest area! Right now plein aire painting is better as it is lots cooler-in the seventies. Now I just have to find all my stuff and get out there. Everything is in boxes and they are piled up all over our small rental. We are working on a house however. Made an offer. Now just waiting as it is a short sale. I will have my own room with a closet and a nearby bathroom to clean brushes, get water, etc. Pretty good light-though it could be better.… Continue

Being an artist

Being an artist means I look at life and things differently than those who are not artists. Colors sing to me, especially when I am painting. Some other artists I know plan things out to the most finite detail. That, is not me. I put my materials out, and am ready to go. My mind clicks to the off position and my hands and body do their thing. I'm not saying everything I do is absolutely wonderful, but I have found my mind usually gets in the way.

Painting or any other art work for me is like me… Continue

Thanks Jan. Happy to accept your offer of friendship. I love your paintings. I created those abstracts impulsively using colour and the flow of paint with the inluence of music playing in the studio at the time. It's like a dance.

Would love if you could find the time to read some of my work. Unfortunately I don't have a dedicated website, so if you know of any other way through which I can share my work with you, would certainly appreciate it. :)

Though, if you could give me your mail id, could send you one of my short stories or the current work in progress :)

PS Jan , I almost forgot . I've been teaching for the past few months as well . I had a doctor staying in Newport for summer , hire me to teach him what I do . When he asked me I said " I've not had any training myself so isn't my teaching you kinda like the blind leading the blind here." It worked out pretty well and while I was teaching him at my gallery another gallery director came in and asked me to teach at her gallery as well . So another allbeit small ,source of income has opened up to keep me out of a fishing boat for another winter . Later Jan

Hi Jan , I'm so sorry I've not checked back on this site in a while . So I apologise for not responding to your compliment way back in the all to short summer . Sorry to hear things didn't pick up sales wise . Really suprised you didn't sell any of your lovely vegetable works . Newport was funny and this Summer we squeeked by , then Sept . was actually pretty good . Then , it's like somebody shut the lights off in town as nothing has happened in a month now . All I've been hearing is pipe smoke of late and wealthy people beating prices down and then not buying . Wish I was some place warm , after spending thirty years as a fisherman I HATE the cold and find it so depressing . I've sublet my studio gallery with a photographer - half the space , half the rent and the landlady has finally taken a look a reality and lowered our rent and is leaving us alone . The photographer broke even thru summer so he's staying till Christmas . Then we'll see what happens next year . Good luck in new location , I've got a collector that wants me to visit him at new home he's purchased in Venice,Fla. and paint his yacht there. I had NO LUCK at all plien aire painting this year . Only one painting was successful and that wound up being wet paint event donation that did well for host charity. Other than that , I was waiting for Allen Funt and the crew from the old Candid Camera show to step out of the bushes or something with some of the things that happened . Was still fun tho , just to be outside and it did give us a good laugh. You take care Jan and we'll talk to you later .

I'll be in the area the end of May- a little further west towards Destin. With the new airport in PC, things should really pick up there!

Hi Jan , Sorry to hear things are slow in your area . I've found that in RI you have to show your art where there are proportionately more folks from outside the area as most RI'ers don't buy art . With this economy things are slow just about every wheres right now. Here in RI I've found Newport to be the best sales area and my sales are off over 50%comp. to 2007which was my best year . So far it's smaller pieces that are moving and not very many of them . My landlady for gallery is upset that I'm not renewing lease which ends June and even tho rent's paid , has stuck a nice for rent sign on window . I'm going to try it on a monthly basis cause if things don't pick up I don't want to be stuck in lease . Stuff like this works against the art flow and I try to make balance between making art and selling art cause most of my experience with other galleries has not been the best (I could write a book!)and I really like meeting my collectors . Good luck Jan , both with art and move and we'll talk to you later .

Hello Jan! I am interested in what part of Florida will be your new home? I paint there quite often.
Re: umbrella. I just ordered a ShadeBuddy from Jerry's. It has a pointy end that you can drive into the ground. I work with a Soltek and it will not hold an umbrella, so I saw a couple of painters using this while I was in FL. I have tried other clamp-on umbrellas and they seem to get in my way. You can usually find shade in the state parks, etc, just not so much on the beaches. The glare is really bad too. Will be anxious to hear how you like FL and painting there.

Hi Jan, Thank you and your work is lovely too. I'm trying to put on canvas the scenes I've seen with a life spent on the water , like the scene that I have on this site , it's a picture of the cove and docks near where I kept my boat . I'm basically selftaught and painted as a hobby for years . A friend stopped by the house to buy clams one day and caught me painting . It turned out his biz partners wife is a well known Copley soc. artist . A critique was arranged and now several years later I'm a fulltime artist with a small studio gallery in Newport , RI and my nick name on the water went from Butch , to Butchy , and after we rescued a little dachound , Bouchay. What can I say , it's a tough crowd. Hope you got my thread on umbrella . Looking at the titles on some of your pieces are you out in Arizona ? We were out there around Halloween last year and I fell in love with the area and climate after being a fisherman most of my life and working on the water thu the winter . It was in the 90's every day , I was in heaven , just wished I'd been able to bring paints with me . My poor Wife tho can't take the sun and heat so we are staying here in the cold damp north east . Love to go to NH ourselves and funny ,all the paintings I did up there sold right away HMMM. Hey you take care and thanks for the compliment , happy painting .

Welcome Aboard. I only started this site in October 2008 and I am proud to have so many artists join in such a short time. Now semi-retired, I live in Hastings on the South Coast of England, you know, Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror, 1066 and all that.
It occurred to me that some sort of network was needed for artists, photographers, writers and poets to pool ideas, exchange views and promote their work. It is new and we will go along together, tell me what you require and we will see if we can do it. It is free; I know that artists are poor penniless souls working in lonely garrets, living on tins of cold baked beans, so I do not want to add to their worries. What I will do, as I have done before is to place the site in the view of art buyers, interior design companies and such like.
If you wish to change the theme/style of your page, click on change theme on the left hand side of your page. If any of your friends and relations are artists, writers, poets, sculptors, in fact anything artistic, let them know they would be most welcome to join the site. Once again, welcome aboard.
