Recent trends in India show more towards marketing managers who are hired and artists who are always in limelight by the media having more successful shows.

There is no doubt in my mind that marketing is more important. With proper marketing drivel can sell like hotcakes whilst truly outstanding work goes begging for lack of proper marketing

Art is a expression of the artist No rules, no holds barred, it is very difficult to paint according to what can sell ... it feels as if you have sold your soul.

It depends on the artist's goal. Is he/she painting for pleasure or painting hoping to sell. If selling is one's measure of success then marketing strategies are certainly more important. A good marketing strategy can sell most anything good or bad.

Art is a field which the society measures by how many paintings you have sold. As 'a successful show' is the one that has many works sold. Why i wonder many artists are recognised when they have struggled for many years and now their works are shooting up but maybe the artist is not alive to enjoy the recognition. But paying attention to publicity may hamper the artists creative flow.
